Lourens is a specialist in food and feed safety. He joined Darling Ingredients in 2015 where he gives global support and assistance with regard to bio-safety and bio-functionality of the feed and pet food ingredients that is produced. He is veterinarian by education and the subject of his PhD research was the improvement of gut resistance in broiler chickens to control disease transmission. He worked for 5 years as veterinary epidemiologist at the Central Veterinary Institute in Lelystad followed by 8 years in quality and food safety assurance, innovation and research for Vion Food Group. Lourens (co-) authored a variety of scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, and he is diplomat of the European college of Veterinary Public Health.
